When we got back from getting Dr. Davidson’s rubber hose removed from my nose, Dad’s green and rust pickup was sitting in the driveway.

“Mom, didn’t you call and tell him I’m sick?” I asked.

“Oh, my.” She looked at me for a moment then closed her eyes and bowed her head with a quick jerk. “I totally forgot.”

Jeff parked the car then got out and opened Mom’s door.

“I tried calling,” Dad yelled. He looked at Mom and then Jeff.

“We had to take Rodney back to the hospital,” Mom said.

“Yeah,” I added. “They stuck a rubber hose up my nose.”

A look of confusion washed over Dad’s face. “What’s going on?”

I went to my room, leaving the three of them in the living room as Mom filled Dad in on what was happening with my stomach.

I called Max and told him about my new disease. It was something called GERDS.

“Sounds cool. Do you think the spell caused it?” he asked.

“I hope not. The doctor must think it’s all the junk I eat. And getting stressed out all the time.”

“You have been eating a lot of red candy lately. You do know that stuff isn’t really licorice, don’t you?”

“Yeah, Dr. Davidson told me. I can’t stand the black stuff, though. I’m grounded from pizza, for one thing.” I turned on my computer.

“What did he say about your voice? It doesn’t sound much better.”

“He thinks the acid in my stomach backwashes and splatters on my voice box. He called it reflux laryngitis.” When the computer finally booted up, I opened the voodoo book.

“So it’s not the power of return?”

“No, it’s the power of the burn. Heartburn!”

I found the page that talked about the crossroads. “Guess what I found.”

“That you can hurl stomach acid into someone’s eyes like the Dilophosaurus dinosaurs did in those Jurassic Park movies?”

“No. I found a spell that will make me be able to play any song in the world I want to play.”

“That sounds cool. But what if it backfires? You might not be able to play anything at all. Ever again.”

“But what if it works? I’ll be able to play everything. The best part is I don’t even have to go to a graveyard. All I have to do is to go down to a crossroads at midnight. I can do it at the end of my road where I catch the bus.”

“Which spell does that?”

“It’s called ‘At the Crossroads.’”

“Rodney,” Mom’s voice came through my closed door.

“I gotta go. Dad’s here, and Mom’s calling me.”

“You still going with him?”

“I hope not. I’ll let you know.”
